Why does it matter?
Since schools are human-centered, we must dig into the root cause of problems before we can make systemic change on outcome goals, like increasing academic achievement and attendance. By addressing belonging & meaning, ideating multiple solutions from diverse perspectives, and moving toward actionable steps through a design thinking approach, we can embed SEL components to make the classroom and the community matter to students and staff.
Reflect on personal core values through embedded classroom SEL activities
Build stronger community with increased belonging, meaning, and purpose in the classroom and community
Increased academic achievement, Decreased chronic absenteeism
Proposed hypothesis
How can you hack it?
How can you hack it?
Brainstorm multiple ideas- your second (or third) is probably better
Take action & try something small- failure is only a learning opportunity
Set goals as experiences, not outcomes
Schedule time to dream- do it with a buddy to move forward faster
Set boundaries and complete tasks aligned with your goals and values
Examples in Practice
Examples in practice
Rethink Code of Behavior meetings- move from rules to goals
Bring personal meaning to classroom through reflection & choice in projects
Gain feedback from student leaders to ideate solutions and include their voice
Use a tool, like meistertask, for your to do lists and visual prioritization
Tie SEL as actionable items into continuous improvement plans
Intentionally have goal setting as a component of course selection
